Homemade Hamburger Helper

Note: This makes a large amount, and I usually get 3 meals out of it anyway. It takes about 35-45 minutes from start to first fork-full. For those who don’t eat vegetables this is amazing cuisine. It is also amazingly easy to modify according to taste, such as adding peppers, or other really hot stuff, or not adding hot stuff at all, or varying the amount of cheese one puts in it. It’s pretty quick, and only dirties one pan.

Getting started with the ingredients

  • 1lb ground hamburger/turkey/chuck whatever you like ($3 bucks or so)
  • 1 8oz can of tomato sauce (35 cents, maybe)
  • 1 taco seasoning packet OR some Ortega taco seasoning sauce stuff (30-95 cents depending on brand)
  • 1 cup olecranon (elbow, haha) macaroni (very cheap indeed)
  • an onion or onion powder if that’s your thing (very cheap)
  • Velveeta Cheese ($5, a regular brick of this fake yet tasty cheese lasts a long time, at least like 5 or 6 iterations of this recipe)

The actual cooking

  1. Brown meat with cut up onion or onion powder to your liking in a large pan
  2. Drain the grease
  3. Add the can of tomato sauce and the taco seasoning, mmmm
  4. add the macaroni
  5. add at least 2 cups of water for the macaroni
  6. stir it all up
  7. let it heat on a fairly high temp until the macaroni is sufficiently cooked, add more water if needed
  8. stir a lot during cooking
  9. While cooking it, slice a bunch of Velveeta cheese
  10. When the macaroni is done cooking, put the cheese on top of it all and let it melt a tad, then stir it all up.
  11. Eat it.
